Gray
Instrumentation: Solo Piano
Duration: 4 minutes
Date of Composition: 2004
About:
Gray was written to celebrate the birth of my nephew, Gray King Baker. Part of my mindset while composing the piece involved imagining what it is like to first experience the sound of the piano and, in particular, its beautiful resonance. Gray moves slowly, allowing the listener to hear each pitch or sonority and its resultant decay. At the same time, the pitches and chords are all tied together in what I like to think of as slow motion melodies. These gentle melodic and motivic ideas align into clear phrases.
