After Marden
Instrumentation: Piano, Harp, Percussion
Duration: 5 minutes
Date of Composition: 2001
About:
After Marden was inspired by the Cold Mountain drawings of Brice Marden. These intimate works contain rows of figures that Marden refers to as "glyphs." While purely graphic, each figure seems reminiscent of a kind of graphic language. Some drawings feature glyphs that are clearly separated, while in others, Marden weaves the glyphs together in to form a fluid, web-like image.
The first half of After Marden presents a series of motives that are intended to the artist's rows of glyphs. The second half connects these motives into longer melodic strands, once more taking a cue from Marden's own techniques.
